A Peep Behind the Scenes - Vacation Bible School 2013
Most of you should be aware, Vacation Bible School ( VBS) will be happening this November from the 19th-23rd. Preparations have been ongoing for the past few months now and the feverish pace will pick up as we move closer to the date. The theme this year is The Secret of Treasure Island; it was thought of by the committee as we ponder over the curriculum which main emphasis is Jesus is our treasure.
Tony Toh aka Captain Curlyhair is our passionate, and a bit loony (!), principal this year. He also is the head of the music team which has, for the first time in VBS history, composed our original theme song! It’s not easy to come up with a tune and lyrics from scratch, but a team of musicians in our church has come together, and we now have an original theme song!
Steven Toh aka Ted E Bear ( he is a harmless, teddy bear kind of pirate) is our media head. He is in charge of photo taking, writing the blog ( http://pbcvbs2013.blogspot) and producing our daily newsletter to the parents during VBS week. He is also the family day director.
Natalie Gan is our music team assistant ( to keep Tony under control, hehe!). She is the ever dependable and sweet helper who gets the whole music team together to practice the songs and dance routine which the kids love so much. This music team is on stage the whole week, dancing and singing tirelessly with the kids.
Joy and Stella are our faithful curriculum facilitators. They are the ones who patiently go through the curriculum to help the teachers identify what and how to teach and to walk them through until VBS week.
Lisa is our experienced big picture person, who knows all the administrative stuff we need to cover such as T-shirt design, location of classes, registration forms of volunteers and kids - all come under her calm and efficient department.
Sook Fun is our data person. She is the one who painstakingly goes through all the volunteers details and deals with all the crazy swapping of roles, volunteers adding on or dropping out, kids details, contacting everyone for training...the list is endless!
Joseph Peh is our steady treasurer who not only has a clear head but a strong heart to take all the expenses and make sure we are running within our budget. Poor guy, he has many mini heart attacks along the way as we spend and spend :) Joseph is also our recreation head, and he has the most tiring job during VBS dealing with screaming, excited kids and making sure no one is hurt. The recreation team also doubles up as our parking attendants so we really salute them!
Annette is our mission team head, and also help with all the paperwork we have to deal with, and manning the registration counter every week. The committee members manning the counter does not have an easy job as we have to deal with many various requests from parents and volunteers, and there have been times we have been scolded as well!
Which brings me to my last point: VBS is an evangelistic event, and every year we encourage our Sunday School kids and parents to use this platform to invite unchurched kids (ie. kids that are currently not attending any church). We want these kids to get an opportunity to hear the gospel and step into a church to experience God’s love through His people. So the committee hope that, as a church, PBC will give full support by praying for us; parents, I encourage you to actively invite unchurched kids to this event.
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Squinty Eye Sue
on behalf of the VBS committee
